Les miserables 2012 film

Movie,

The story is based on the 1862 French Novel of the same name by Victor Hugo.

Background,

French revolution

The theme of the story ( judgement and mercy).

In 1815, Jean Valijean was released from a prison after serving 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread for his sister’s son. Because of his paroled status, he could not work. After 19 years of service, hatred filled his heart. A kind bishop showed him mercy and offered him a place to sleep, called him an honored guest, and gave him food. However, because of his old nature, he stole things from the bishop. While the police caught him, the bishop covered him and showed him mercy again, but also encouraged him to become an honest man. On that day, his heart was changed.

Later on, he changed his name and became a mayor and also owned a factory. At the same time, a ruthless police man Javert chased him. Long story short, in the eyes of Javert, who felt that his calling from God is to catch criminals to the prison, thought that a person can never change.

There was an occasion that Javert was caught, and under the mercy of Jean. being a changed man after receiving the grace and mercy, Jean let him go and spared his life. This changed Javert, whose belief system collapsed. Finally he committed suicide.

Jean saved a girl, Cosette, and adopted her as a daughter. At the same time, he also saved a young man who was a key member of the french revolution. The young man later became Cosette’s husband. After Jean’s mission on this world was finished, he did his last confession, gave thanks to God, and rested in peace.

Reflection

It is a good story of sin and slavery, redemption and salvation.

In Exodus 34:7, God said He said he does not leave the guilty unpunished.

And thes same time,

In Psalm 32:1, David said that “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered”.

How could those verses get reconciled? The answer is Jesus Christ, who died for our sins. At the cross, He took our place so that we can be spared.

I like the movie theme and also the great songs. I highly recommend this movie.
